Highlights from Acapulco

Dear Friends,

Spending nearly three weeks at the Acapulco Club de Yates has been great experience. The Yacht Club is tucked away in the west corner of the harbor in old town Caleta. It is away from the large hotels and tourists. We have enjoyed walks in the evenings in this charming neighborhood adjacent to Caleta Beach. The Yacht Club is friendly with service and personal help above and beyond. We had difficulty getting a package that was detained in Mexico City for ten days, and the staff in the marina office worked hours helping us.

The divers of Quebrada are still performing their diving magic for the tourists. We enjoyed two shows from the patio of a dinner restaurant perched on the side of the cliffs. The handsome young men climb slowly up the steep face of a cliff, and after a few moments of concentration, jump hundreds of feet into the surf below. It was exciting to watch years ago on television, and much better in person!

We also took in the bullfights in the Plaza del Toros. The bull-fighting spectacle is performed every Sunday afternoon at 5:30. It reminded us of a baseball game with hawkers selling beer and soda, popcorn and souvenirs. The fanfare at the beginning consists of the grand march of the horses and matadors around the perimeter of the stadium. Everyone yells and cheers, and the tradition and colorful outfits are spectacular. We focused on the style and grace of the matador, and tried not to think about the bull and his family. Every time the bull would charge, everyone yells, “Óle”! We enjoyed the bullfights and would go again. The people watching is great too!

Naturally, Acapulco has fine restaurants with great views of the harbor, and expensive prices. We had several fancy dinners with great vistas, but especially enjoyed a small neighborhood place called “La Cabana”. It sits on a small beach where we could watch Mexican families enjoying the cool evenings. A typical mahi-mahi dinner with a cocktail is about $6.00.

We are ready to depart for Huatulco tomorrow. It is 200 miles south and cruisers report that we will love it.

We enjoy hearing from many of you on the website. Thank you and please sign our guest book.

Regards,

Captain Doug and Judy
