The two Captains take a break.

HISTORY Living and working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we enjoyed membership in the
Milwaukee Yacht Club for over twenty years. We sailed on Lake Michigan on a 30' Morgan
sailboat. The sailing season was warm, glorious, and way too short. We were lucky to get
four months of reasonably nice sailing weather. When we bought Limerence, our new Beneteau
375 in 1986, we couldn't bear to warehouse it for the winter, so we had it trucked to the
beautiful city of San Diego. This enabled us to sail in the Pacific year round. We had
family in the area, and with lots of government business in San Diego, the decision made
sense. We commuted to our boat every few months for ten years.
Docking Limerence in a San Diego marina put us smack in the middle of the "cruising
community." These are people who love adventure, and think nothing of cruising
hundreds of miles to interesting places. The cruising lifestyle intrigued us as we planned
for retirement. Slowly, we were drawn into a way of living far different than anything
we'd imagined in Milwaukee. We dreamed and planned for awhile, conferred with our
families, sold our home, and in April of 1998 after retiring, relocated to San Diego and
moved aboard Limerence to prepare for our cruise.
What is limerence?
We fell into the emotional state of limerence after seeing our Beneteau at the Chicago
boat show in 1985. Some of you have experienced this thing called limerence. Some of you
have not. Some of you feel love. Some of you feel both. Limerence is a deep, aching
infatuation. It is love, lust, longing, and a jumble of passionate feelings. It is
suddenly knowing that only one person (or boat!) can satisfy your passionate desire.
Limerence is intensified through adversity. It is the source of greatest happiness and of
greatest despair. Limerence is the name of our sailboat.
Past Lives...
Doug recently retired after 40 years with Johnson Controls, Inc. as VP of government
business. He worked closely with the federal government to initiate and implement energy
management control systems. Doug is an engineer, private pilot, and licensed general class
ham radio operator. Doug's job on Limerence is to keep all systems operating and guarding
our energy efficiency, while sailing, navigating, and managing our communications systems.
Judy retired in 1996 after 25 years in executive sales and marketing positions in the
staffing industry and the radio advertising business. She has recently studied Spanish and
can make passable conversation with Mexican friends. Her job on Limerence is to help sail
and navigate, manage medical issues, and favorite task of all -- invent gourmet
dishes prepared on a two-burner Force 10 stove. |
